Our story

"My father taught me that a roof is the one part of a house nobody thinks about — until it fails."

Apex Roofing & Exteriors was founded in 2003 by Mark Ellison, working solo out of a transit van in Guildford. His first jobs were small repairs for neighbours — a slipped tile here, a leaking flashing there — word of mouth from people who trusted him to turn up, do the job properly, and charge a fair price.

Two decades on, we're a team of 24 directly-employed roofers, leadworkers and apprentices covering Surrey, Hampshire and Greater London. Mark's son, Tom, now runs day-to-day operations, but the standard hasn't moved: every roof is surveyed properly, quoted honestly, and finished by the same crew that started it — never subcontracted out to strangers.

How much does a new roof cost in the UK?

A full re-roof typically ranges from £5,000 for a small terraced property to £15,000+ for a larger detached home, depending on roof size, pitch, access and material choice (concrete tile, natural slate or clay). Every quote from Apex is itemised and fixed after a free, no-obligation survey — so you know exactly what you're paying for before any work starts.

Are you insured and accredited?

Yes. We hold £5m public liability insurance, are NFRC accredited, and are listed as a Which? Trusted Trader and Checkatrade Verified member. Every job also comes with a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee, registered in your name.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most residential re-roofs take between 4 and 8 working days, weather permitting, from scaffold-up to final clean-down. Smaller repairs are usually completed in a single day. Your surveyor will confirm an exact timeline as part of your fixed quote.

Do you help with insurance claims for storm damage?

Yes — we regularly work with homeowners' insurers. We can provide a detailed damage report and photographic evidence to support your claim, and carry out a temporary weatherproof fix while the claim is processed if needed.

Do I need planning permission for a new roof?

Most like-for-like re-roofs fall under permitted development and don't need planning permission. Listed buildings, conservation areas, or roofs that change the shape or height of the property may need consent — we'll flag this during your free survey and can advise on next steps.
